Anand Mahindra is one of the most celebrated persons in the Indian work world. He is Chairman of the Mahindra Group, which is a world wide federation of companies working in more than 100 countries. The Mahindra Group has behind it the vision and active support of the Managing Director, Anand Mahindra, who has developed into a very significant section of the world industry in motor cars, technology and services, renewable energy, finance, etc. He has stated, in effect, that good business is not completely divorced from the precepts of good values in the past.

Early Life and Education

Anand Mahindra was born in Mumbai in 1955 to Harish and Indira Mahindra. He studied film making and architecture at Harvard University in 1977, graduating magna cum laude. Anand Mahindra completed his MBA in Harvard in 1981. He joined the Mahindra Ugine Steel Company Ltd. in 1981, in the capacity of an executive assistant to the Finance Director. By encouragement and stimulus for innovation, he climbed the success ladder very fast. In 1997 he took over as the Managing Director of Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd. and subsequently as Chairman of the company in 2012.

Under his leadership, the company entered new industries and markets. He encouraged collaboration between technology and manufacturing, turning Mahindra into one of India’s strongest brands.

Social Impact and Public Recognition

Anand Mahindra is known for his exploitation of social media in highlighting the real-life examples of courage and innovation.  He often posts examples of the work done by ordinary Indians in an extraordinary manner on the X platform (formerly Twitter). The overwhelming viral qualities of these posts bring many to the notice and help people.

In one instance he helped a young boy from Kerala who had constructed a low-cost vehicle for his disabled father by promising to educate the child. In another instance he offered work to an individual who made a motor bicycle by the use of his creative ideas. 

These instances point out that leadership is not only power, but also compassion. He has gone beyond philanthropy into education and rural development. The ‘Nanhi kali’ project, begun by the K. C. Mahindra Education Trust, aims to educate underprivileged girls in remote areas throughout India. This plan has taken thousands of families and is one of the largest plans for girls’ education in the country.

Anand Mahindra believes that leadership must be responsible and inclusive. His speeches always reflect certain themes, like sustainability, human potential and technology with responsibility. Under his leadership, Mahindra & Mahindra Limited has committed itself to achieving carbon neutrality, and building electric vehicles through Mahindra Electric. He believes that the future of India depends on the sustainable growth of its industries backed by indigenous talents.

He has received multiple awards for his contribution to business and society including the Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur, conferred on him by the French government, and recognition by Forbes India of one of the most powerful business leaders in Asia.

Anand Mahindra continues to give practical evidence of his own theory. His work shows what a business leader can do to earn a profit while improving the lives of others. His success shows that when leadership and empathy meet, the result can be greater than the confines of the board room.
